Fifty Mishoonash by Artist, Deborah Spears Moorehead is an oil painting on canvas. It illustrates a historic event that happened in 1638 when Colonists in Hartford, Connecticut were out of food and starving. They didn’t plant or harvest for any crops since they were battling against the Eastern Woodland Tribal Nations violently stealing their homelands, killing, to enforce themselves as the ruling authoritative hegemonic power over the people and the land they renamed New England. The massacre of the Pequot Tribal Nation was in 1637 and in 1638 they found themselves with out enough food to get through the year. This is an image of the tribes along the Connecticut river who were paid to bring fifty bushels of corn to Hartford, Connecticut. The location depicts the area overlooking Sugarloaf Mountain and the Native people of Pocumtuck Village. This original painting can be viewed in person, and is exhibiting in Deerfield, Massachussetts in the permanent collection of the Pocumtuck Valley, Historic Deerfield Museum, Deerfield, Massachussetts.
